Designed by Daisuke Amaya (aka: Pixel) in 2004, Cave Story was a freeware PC game with gameplay reminiscent to Super Metroid that became popular enough to warrant a freeware patch by fan translation group Aeon Genesis. Overall, I was just trying to explain that one's first experience with Cave Story should be the original, not the remakes.Cave Story, also known as DÃ…Âkutsu Monogatari or 洞窟物語, will be seeing a release on WiiWare on March 22nd. Another thing I forgot to mention was the inferior translation on Nicalis' ports. Pixel deserves that money, and I hope he receives the majority of money made on the ports. They are inferior in every way the original Cave Story is a perfect piece of software. I purchased Cave Story on Steam and Cave Story 3DS expecting them to be awesome. Issues with the Steam version: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED, Costs money for some reason*, screwed up frame rate.ĮDIT: *If the original version cost $100, it would be worth it. The freeware PC version is the only version of the game worth getting. I absolutely despise Cave Story 3D, as the lighting is too dark, the camera is at an awkward angle, and the controls feel slippery. It just didn't make sense to keep producing a game which had no advantages over its other cheaper ports.Īs someone who considers Cave Story one of the greatest games of all time, I must say all of Nicalis' remakes do no justice to the original. The remastered soundtrack used to be exclusive to the 3D version but it was later added to Cave Story+ through an update. It has the least amount of content besides the original and is the most expensive. The problem was that there are so many other versions of the game for a much lower price.
It's been out of production for a very long time. Hopefully I'll be able to get around to beating the Hard difficulty soon. I will now replay Cave Story (on the eShop version) for like. WiiWare, PSP, DSi, and others, although very good ports, now feel incomplete without the extended features and extra levels. The interface also feels much smoother compared to the DSi version. Cave Story eShop goes further, and although there are no more options for new graphics and music (they weren't that great anyway), the resolution is upped greatly with an additional widescreen option and pretty good 3D for a game with sprites. Obviously the freeware version is the original, but the + version has all of the necessary features of a port (Curly Story, the different difficulties, option between new/old graphics/musicX2, and all of the extra levels). After the eShop release, I have concluded that these are the definitive versions of Cave Story:
